Over the past 18 months, COPS has been proud to take part in the Creative Learning Abilities Partnerships project with the University of Hertfordshire — a nationally funded initiative focused on inclusive and creative partnership working with people with learning disabilities and autistic people.
The project explored new ways of understanding what matters most to people when it comes to health and wellbeing. Rather than relying on traditional research methods, the team used creative and accessible approaches — including art, music, and group activities — to ensure that everyone could share their views and experiences in ways that felt comfortable and meaningful.
By taking the time to build trust and work closely with community partners, the project successfully engaged people who are often under-represented in research. This collaborative approach helped participants contribute their insights and play a genuine role in shaping future priorities.
The Power of Partnership
This work demonstrates the value of strong partnerships between community organisations and academic institutions. It reflects our shared commitment to inclusion, co-production, and innovation, ensuring that research is not only about communities, but created with them.
It’s also a powerful example of how creative methods can make research more accessible, engaging, and impactful, opening the door for more people to have their voices heard.
Looking Ahead
At COPS, we are excited about the potential for further collaborations like this — partnerships that allow us to bring the experiences and perspectives of our community into the academic space and help drive meaningful change.
We look forward to building on this work and continuing to create opportunities that amplify the voices of people with learning disabilities and autistic people.
